Revolutionizing Correctional Design
San Diego County Women's Detention Facility
San Diego County Women's Detention Facility (SDCWDF) is a ground-breaking model for adult facilities in this country—the design promotes a culture of rehabilitative change and successful reintegration to society.
The design/build team of Balfour Beatty; KMD Architects; & HMC Architects is putting new principles into practice for ‘old’ responses within the justice system of female incarceration —the first of its kind in the U.S.
The design-build team innovated progressive solutions for the unique qualities of the female population and a supportive environment to re-integrate them successfully into society as productive citizens. The result sets a new precedent in corrections design while implementing key detention facility mandates such as security and safety for the inmates, staff, and public-at-large. The 45-acre site encompasses 1,216 beds and 24 buildings, designed to meet LEED Gold.
